How I landed Here

Throughout medical school I had toyed with the idea of just about every medical and surgical speciality. On arriving on Guy's Campus in 2012, bright eyed without a clue in the world I kept an open mind.

In my third year I did a student selected component in Paediatrics which I liked but didn't love. In search for a more practical speciality I transitioned into Paediatric Surgery which again I enjoyed but didn't love.

In my fourth year I did an orthopaedic attachment where I was entranced by how cool and nonchalant the orthopods were and I decided that's what I wanted to do.

Until I met Mr. David Nott at a lecture where his extraordinary global contribution couldn't be ignored. I wanted to be just like him.

I therefore set my sights on Vascular Surgery. I arranged a taster week and I loved it. I arranged an elective and I loved it. I secured a foundation job in a tertiary vascular centre and I didn't love it so much. Turns out four months of something can really highlight the true uglies of a speciality.

My clinical supervisor at the time was an ENT surgeon and she was fantastic and prodded me in the way of her chosen speciality. One taster week lead to another, which lead to a lot of audits and research and an F3. It was set. I had found my speciality.

Filled with incredible surgeons with great personalities. Filled with breadth and depth if needed. Filled with potential for innovation and technology. Filled with excitement and satisfaction.

I completed my core surgical jobs and loved ENT Surgery.

I am now a speciality registrar in North Thames London and still loving ENT Surgery.
